The humble Farmer, Robert Karl Skoglund

"Captivating"

"Same audience --- different angle"

“Robert Skoglund … hosted the best program in the history of Maine Radio, The Humble Farmer…. “Humble’s” mix of old and newer jazz, corny and sophisticated humor and comments were idiosyncratic and funny and, at times, bitingly serious. They were what public radio is supposed to be for. His weekly shows were the best program that MPR has ever produced.”

On June 28 and 29, that’s Saturday and Sunday, from 8:30 until 4:30 there will be a hands-on demonstration on how to assemble Solar hot water heaters at The humble Farmer’s in St. George. Several master solar energy gurus will be on hand to actually show you and me how to build these things. Knowing more than I did a month ago, I guarantee that they will talk little and show us how to do much. The workshop is free but donations will be accepted. Ask for more information from The humble Farmer 207-226-7442 humble@humblefarmer.com

Bring food. Marsha says she is not feeding the masses this time. But that would be like a mother hen rejecting her chicks or Niagara Falls running uphill and I'm waiting to see it.

When I asked for a hint of what was going to happen at the June 28-29 solar workshop, an email arrived that explained it all:

Dear Robert

yes copper thinwall pipe is used, thik wall is not necessary because pressure is below 20psi copper el's and tee's are used and leadless solder and flux , also the use of fine grit plumers paper and amapp tourch to put it all together size of fittings tee's 1/2 toa 3/4 so the manifolds are 3/4 risers are 1/2 in two 3/4 in el's per heat exchangers are use copper pipe is used in collector the "pex" is used to plumb over to a couple of tanks this is 3/4 in. tanks have a electric ressistance that backs up the sun size of tanks depends on use of dhw at 120-140deg

A sun powered pump circulates anti freeze in collectors to a heat exchanger on/or/in tank soni has been looking at wether a internal or externat exchanger is best so the scenne shifts to acquisition of best source price and also remember SEADS np may be a way for donations for products or parts John and Richard have np noumber so 6 tees pr panel 3-4 1/2 in pipes 4in shorter tahan bbox 2 3/4 in width of box 2 els per panel pex color coded for hot /cold pump an el cid magnetic drive check with John on that absorbet is sheet of aluminum flashing paint is latex flat black

thanks for you creative mind

chas

All this and more will become clear on June 28 and 29. The term "dhw" will also be explained at that time. [I just learned it is domestic hot water] Although the lexical items pertaining to building your own solar hot water heater are handy when consulting a solar guru, watching a silent video of the entire operation should enable you to assemble the components and perhaps actually build one.

March 20, 2008 ---- Dear humble, I lived in Maine for 9 wonderful, soulful and eye opening years. I came from the south, no not Portland but Atlanta, and found myself and who I was, in Maine. You were a big part of that. On Friday nights, because my tv had given out and I didn't want to pay for the cable to be strung down our road to my house, I listened to you and then the late Ed Bradley and Jazz from Lincoln Center while I tied my Caddis flies for the upcoming summer. I have since moved away from Maine, but think about it daily and miss it with a broken heart. Today I went onto the Maine Public Radio site to see if I could still hear your show on Friday nights. It made me sad to see that your show was no longer in the line-up. You were the best show on there! The humor and jazz were the perfect ending to a work week. I will miss your show always and look back on it as part of my growing into who I am today. Mason Shives

Thank you, Mason. Your comment made those shows worth while. And here's good news: You can hear The humble Farmer radio show here on my web page. humble

"I've heard nothing but good things about the event, and your part made quite a difference! I've been to many, many dinners for various Chambers and usually the speaker is someone who is about as interesting as the salad that's being served. You made the night fun and special! The bank plans on sponsoring the dinner again next year due to its great success!"
